Stories of the City

Sounds of the City, Annie Saunders

Tune in to Stories of the City with an Immersive Audio Tour

Conrad New York Downtown has always championed creativity within our community, from our engagement in authentic local events to the curated artworks lining our walls. So, when the news broke about CURRENT, a free soundwalk through Lower Manhattan available until October 1st, we were one of the first in the loop.

CURRENT uses binaural sound, composition and environmental recordings to immerse listeners in past and present-day tales of the city. All you need to connect is your earbuds and a smartphone, and the narration will guide you on a thought-provoking 1.5-mile walk that begins and ends in Zuccotti Park, Lower Manhattan. The experience was created by award-winning interdisciplinary artist Annie Saunders in collaboration with Andrew Schneider, Jackie! Zhou/One Thousand Birds and Marc Downie of the Open Ended Group.

Discover lesser-known corners of the city in addition to iconic sites such as Battery Park, Trinity Church, the New York Stock Exchange and One Liberty Plaza, all while journeying through stories of water, time, construction, destruction, and synchronicity. Inspired by the reemergence of New Yorkers as the city adapts to a new era, the 2021 Tribeca Festival Award-Winning Selection also explores important questions about sustainability and resilience.

As Alexix Soloski writes in The New York Times – “The vignettes, timed to play at the golden hour, are casual, edifying and candid, asking us to consider the overlapping landscapes of the cemented-over wetlands, the skyscraper canyons, the storm surges.”

How to Join

The soundwalk starts every half hour beginning at 5:30pm, with the last showtime at 8:30pm.* To ensure entry, be sure to arrive and join the experience via the custom URL 10 minutes in advance. A QR code can be found on signage around Zuccotti Park, which takes you to a countdown to the next walk.
